Florida native Brooke Pearson, a graphic design major, put her creativity to work designing and painting art for the University’s Christmas card.
The cards from President and Mrs. William M. B. Fleming, Jr. bear the water-color image of a starfish-topped Christmas tree decorated with seashells. The University mailed about 6,000 of the cards.
Pam Fleming commissioned Pearson to design the art after admiring one of her drawings in a student art showcase about a year ago. Pearson ruminated over the design for a long time.
“I wanted it to represent PBA well and represent beach culture without being too cliché or seen before,” Pearson said. “I wanted the colors to be really vibrant, since Florida doesn’t really lose its color.”
The inside of the card contains a message based on Colossians 1:15-17: “Just as the star of Bethlehem pointed the Wise Men to the birth of our Savior, the starfish and the other wondrous details of creation point us gratefully to the One through whom and for whom all things were created.”
Pearson is a senior from Sanford, Florida, Presidential Ambassador, member of the Residence Life staff and student in the Frederick M. Supper Honors Program. She said she’s grateful for the opportunity to design the card’s cover and for the and artistic freedom that the Flemings gave her.
“The whole experience was very humbling,” Pearson said. “They empower students in creative ways.”
