PBA News

PBA COVID-19 Message 13: Thursday, April 2, 2020 – 2:40 p.m.:

Following a decision by Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis, PBA will suspend campus services that do not impact the health and safety of all or impede the delivery of online/ remote learning. The Governor’s order takes effect at 5 p.m. today.

At this time, PBA recommends that all those who can work remotely do so in order to protect those who may be more susceptible to the serious effects of contracting COVID-19. Therefore, PBA is extending the directive to employees for remote work through Monday, May 4, 2020. Our goal is to further reduce the number of employees on campus, granting exceptions to those whose work impacts online/ remote learning or campus security.

During this health crisis, PBA defines essential employees as those directed by their supervisor to report to a designated University worksite other than their personal residence, at specific dates and times. It is possible that an employee will have a portion of duties that are on campus and can fulfill the remainder of their duties remotely.
Contact your supervisor for details.
Campus Safety employees are designated as essential.
Those employees who can work remotely will continue to be assigned work and will be expected to complete assignments to the fullest extent possible.
Supervisors are responsible for designating essential employees, and for assigning and tracking their non-essential employees’ remote work. To be clear, these changes do not remove an employee’s responsibilities to complete their work assignments. Supervisors should work with HR representatives to ensure essential employee designations are included in job descriptions.
Essential and non-essential fulltime employees who cannot work remotely for either of the following reasons will receive paid administrative leave through Friday, May 1, for the period of time they are unavailable to work:
Because of childcare or eldercare responsibilities due to COVID-19-related school and facility closings, or
Because their PBA duties cannot be performed remotely and no alternate remote work is available or feasible.
Employees who are sick due to symptoms of a cold, flu or COVID-19 or who are caring for a dependent with such symptoms will receive paid administrative leave for any time lost through May 1.
This guidance, which is provided by PBA, is effective immediately through May 1 and will be revised as the situation evolves. Further updates will be provided.
Contact your supervisor for details.

We will get through this together resting confidently in the Power of Prayer.

Important Announcement from the PBA Crisis Management Team

PBA COVID-19 Message 12: Friday, March 27, 2020 – 2 p.m.

Dear PBA Community,

To bring you up to date, Palm Beach Atlantic’s West Palm Beach Campus is complying with the county’s Emergency Order that went into effect at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 26. The order established that non-essential businesses close to curtail the spread of COVID-19. The order provided an exemption for PBA and reads:

“k. Private colleges, trade schools, and technical colleges, but only as needed to facilitate online or distance learning, perform critical research, or perform critical functions, and university, college, or technical college residence halls, but only to the extent needed to accommodate students who cannot return to their homes;”

The county emergency order did not have an end date. County officials did not rule out making the order stricter in the future.

Over the past two weeks, the PBA community has worked to this status with classes operating online, employees working remotely and reducing the number of residential students. We encourage you to consider contingency plans now should Palm Beach County government place tighter restrictions on the public.

PBA’s Orlando Campus is now closed with all staff and faculty working remotely due to the Orange County order mandating that residents stay-at-home and non-essential businesses close effective at 11 p.m. Thursday, March 26 until April 9 at 11 p.m.

PBA is updating an FAQ with contact information and answers to commonly asked questions. https://www.pba.edu/campus-life/health-wellness/safety/covid-faq.html

PBA COVID-19 Message 10

As the Centers for Disease Control further heightens their public health standards and in an effort to reduce the population density on campus. Palm Beach Atlantic will close campus housing effective 5 p.m., Monday, March 23, except for those students with extreme circumstances approved by Residence Life. As we continue to consult with expert healthcare providers with experience in infectious disease and public health, we have determined the following pro-active measures will take place:

Following this release, residential students will receive an e-mail detailing specific check-out directions. This e-mail will include a 2020 Housing Exit Survey each resident will be required to complete by Noon, Sunday, March 22, regardless of whether they are currently on-campus or off-campus.
Students seeking permission to remain in a residence hall because of extreme circumstances, must complete the survey to detail the nature of their concern. Applying for permission does not guarantee you will be approved. Only a very small amount of exceptions will be approved. Those students will be contacted directly by a Residence Life staff member.
Any other students currently living on-campus are required to remove their belongings and complete the “express check-out” process by 5 p.m., on Monday, March 23.
Students who have returned home or who are living remotely are encouraged to return to campus to retrieve their belongings and complete “express check-out” at a time deemed safe and convenient. If you desire to remove your belongings after Monday, March 23, please indicate in the forthcoming survey your intended date of return. Check-outs following Monday will be approved by appointment only. Be advised, any federal, state, and local regulations or the closure of the University may affect your date/timing of return. No student who is symptomatic or believes they have become directly exposed to COVID-19 until approved by health professionals.
The University is in the process of developing a refund policy for room and board and will provide additional information in the future.
Although we realize closing residence halls is not the optimal choice, PBA believes that this is the best course of action at present as the possibility exists that there may be future travel and health restrictions.

The University will make every effort to accommodate students and each case will receive individual attention. If you have questions, please contact reslife@pba.edu, only after you complete the forthcoming Housing 2020 Exit Survey.

CLASSES

The Spring 2020 semester will continue as scheduled with classes provided in online/remote/distance learning environments through end of the semester, April 30. Students who engage in experiential learning in their course will receive additional information from their instructors.

CAMPUS FACILITIES

Beginning Monday, March 23, campus offices will remain open with a limited number of staff on hand with the remaining staff members working remotely to further reduce the number of people on campus. Beginning Monday, March 23, the Greene Complex will have the following operating schedule.

COMMENCEMENT

CHAPEL

In light of the scheduling changes that have impacted the Spring 2020 semester, the Chapel Office is reducing the chapel credit requirement from 24 to 12 credits for the Fall 2019-Spring 2020 academic year. Currently, over 76% of the student body has already met the requirement. In addition, the Chapel Office will provide students with virtual chapel credit opportunities through encouraging messages from gifted communicators. These will be delivered to students via email on a weekly basis and will include a brief questionnaire which is automatically returned to the Chapel Office once it has been completed. Contact Stephen_Worley@pba.edu with questions.

The Chapel Office will continue to serve the University family’s spiritual needs and make sure all chapel questions and concerns are addressed. Let’s not respond to this challenge as those who have no hope but as those whose confidence is in their Sovereign God!

WORKSHIP

Given guidance to practice social distancing in this unprecedented situation, perhaps our greatest act of service is to physically withdraw from the community around us for a period of time. It is necessary, then, to make adjustments to the Workship requirement for the 2019-2020 academic year.

For students who have already completed your service, please turn in your completed form by scanning or taking a photo and emailing it to Workship@pba.edu
For students who have completed your service but do not yet have your supervisor’s signature, please fill out the digital Workship log here https://bit.ly/WorkshipLog
Students who have not yet finished the service requirement will receive grace. No one will be placed on Workship probation or fined for the 2019-2020 school year.
The Workship office is still open and can be reached at (561) 803-2580 or Workship@pba.edu Service never ceases though it often takes different forms. We encourage you to explore new avenues of service during this time. Do you know someone in a vulnerable population who cannot leave their home? Offer to drop off groceries or other needed supplies on their porch. Do you have a neighbor or family member that still must go to work? Offer to help them with childcare. Do you know someone that is self-isolating? Have a virtual cup of coffee with them on FaceTime or WhatsApp. Do you have extra time? Spend it praying for first responders and healthcare workers. Workship Updates will be issued as other ways to serve are identified. Keep sharing your stories of service!

ADMISSIONS

Effective Friday, March 20, at 5 p.m., PBA will suspend all admissions campus visits until further notice. Staff members are available to assist prospective students via email. The online application remains open for Summer and Fall 2020.

HEALTHCARE RESOURCES

In keeping with recommendations by health care providers, those who are experiencing mild flu-like symptoms should seek telehealth care instead of going to a doctor’s office, walk-in clinic or hospital.

If you have the student Aetna insurance you can receive telehealth care by accessing this website:

https://www.aetna.com/individuals-families/member-rights-resources/covid19.html

If you have health insurance that does not offer a telehealth option:

Baptist Health is temporarily offering a “free service as a Public Health need for the community and patients age 2+ with cold and flu-like symptoms or with concerns about coronavirus.” Per Baptist Health Care “Our experts will evaluate your symptoms and travel history under guidance provided by the CDC, and provide the care or peace of mind you need.” You can receive Baptist Health Care by accessing this website: https://baptisthealthcareondemand.net/landing.htm

Reminder: The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends:

Hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette are a must. We all know to wash our hands before meals and after using the restroom, but more frequent hand washing is a good idea. Use soap and water, lathering for 20 seconds at least. If soap and water aren’t handy, use hand sanitizer. There are many dispensers throughout campus.
Avoid touching your face with your hands and cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing. Dispose of the tissue promptly then wash your hands. Alternatively, sneeze into your elbow or sleeve if tissues are not available.
Students should limit their in-person interactions as much as possible to reduce the risk of receiving or transmitting COVID-19, even if you are not experiencing any symptoms. Remember to practice “social distancing,” which means remaining out of congregate settings, avoiding mass gatherings and maintaining distance (approximately 6 feet or 2 meters) from others when possible.
If you have further COVID-19 related questions, please direct them to healthalert@pba.edu.

PBA COVID-19 Message 9 from the Crisis Management Team

Dear PBA Community,

Thank you for reading this informational update that includes a list of contacts at the end. Palm Beach Atlantic University continues to monitor the COVID-19 outbreak worldwide as well as its presence locally. There are no identified cases of COVID-19 on the University’s campuses.

As we consult with expert health care providers with experience in infectious disease and public health, we have determined the following pro-active measures:

In light of the scheduling changes that have impacted the Spring 2020 semester, the Chapel Office is reducing the chapel credit requirement from 24 to 12 credits for the Fall 2019-Spring 2020 academic year. Currently, over 76% of the student body has already met the requirement.

As we continue to consult with expert health care providers with experience in infectious disease and public health, we have determined the following pro-active measures will take place:

As a reminder, The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends:

MARCH 12, 2020 — 3:15 p.m.

A Message from President Fleming Regarding COVID-19

Palm Beach Atlantic University continues our vigilance related to the COVID-19 situation.

As a Christ first university we use wisdom to balance prudence and caution, relying on James 3:17 to help us act as good stewards as we care for the entire University community. At PBA our mission has always been enlightening minds, enriching souls and extending hands in service to all those given to us by the Lord.

PBA’s first consideration always is the wellbeing of the University community. We are continuously monitoring information related to the COVID-19 situation and reassessing the needs of our students, faculty and staff as appropriate. To date there are no COVID-19 cases in the University community, and PBA is open and operating normally.

Currently, online coursework is available ONLY to students who are self-isolating due to recent travels or possible exposure to COVID-19 or applicable pre-existing health conditions.

PBA is acting with prudence in taking the following steps effective midnight Sunday (3/15):

Chapel will be suspended until March 31. Due to this scheduling change we will be reducing the chapel requirements for our students for the spring 2020 semester. The amount of the requirement reduction will depend on the length of the suspension. If deemed necessary, due to current circumstances, students may be provided with alternative means to earn chapel credits. Do not hesitate to contact the Chapel Office (561-803-2521) if you have any questions or concerns or are in need of pastoral care.
“Now is a great time to exercise your faith by staying informed, being conscientious of your health and those around you, and trusting in God,” Campus Pastor Dr. Bernard Cueto.

Departing air travel for all non-essential PBA-related business and activities, including athletics, is suspended until March 31 for all faculty, students and staff. This does not apply to personal travel, however, depending on the circumstances, one should be prepared for possible self-isolation upon their return. Employees should contact their supervisors if questions arise.
Meanwhile, the PBA Sailfish are scheduled to participate in this weekend’s
NCAA Division II South Region Men’s Basketball Tournament in Lakeland. Only essential personnel will be allowed to attend the games. Click here for more information.

PBA Health Alert- Message 5

Palm Beach Atlantic University welcomes its students and faculty back from spring break, while also continuing to closely monitor the latest authoritative information about COVID-19.

At the same time, we are counting on each student and faculty member to be a responsible member of the University community.

If you traveled to China, Iran, Italy, Japan, South Korea or other areas designated by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as a Level 3 risk zone, or to Seattle, Washington, within the past 14 days, it is IMPORTANT that you take the short survey below – if you have not already done so –to help us better protect the campus community.

STUDENT: https://form.jotform.com/PBAstudents/spring-break-campus-return-question

EMPLOYEE: https://form.jotform.com/PBAstudents/employee-campus-return-questionnair

PBA continues to follow guidance from the CDC and state and local health departments to provide our campus community accurate and timely information about COVID-19. The information is offered so that you can make knowledgeable and prudent decisions about your health.

If the CDC or local health officials provide updated instructions or recommendations different than those shared in this message, PBA acknowledges that those instructions and recommendations replace this guidance and should be followed.

PBA is being proactive in doing all that reasonably can be done to keep our campus free of COVID-19:

The campus underwent a deep cleaning during Spring Break.
PBA has added many additional dispensers of hand sanitizer throughout campus. Use them!
Our Aramark partners who run the Fraser Dining Hall and other campus food services have elevated the temperature of their dishwashers and dishes and utensils are being sent through twice before placing them back in service.
Handwashing posters have been placed in bathrooms, along with posters that include instructions on how to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Of course, PBA continues to urge all members of the University to follow the basic but important recommendations of the CDC:

If you are sick, stay at home. You can help us limit the possibly of spreading illness to others. Symptoms to watch for include coughing, sneezing, shortness of breath or a fever, even a mild one. If you are considering a visit to your doctor or urgent care, call first to advise them of your arrival and to get additional instructions.
Hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette are a must. We all know to wash our hands before meals and after using the restroom, but more frequent hand washing is a good idea. Use soap and water, lathering for 20 seconds at least. If soap and water aren’t handy, use hand sanitizer.
Avoid touching your face with your hands and cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing. Dispose of the tissue promptly then wash your hands. Alternatively, sneeze into your elbow or sleeve if tissues are not available. It’s also a good time to pass on greeting others with a hug or a handshake; a simple nod and hello will do for now.
Help us keep PBA clean. PBA is being proactive by initiating enhanced cleaning methods in classrooms and other common areas on campus, including the dining venues and the kitchens.
Do you have future travel plans?Check the CDC’s online traveler’s health notices for the latest guidance for each country. If you are feeling ill before you travel, it is best to stay at home.

What is known, however, is that there is a low fatality rate, which appears to be limited to the elderly and individuals who have ongoing medical conditions. While the virus has a high infectious rate, most people who contract common human Coronavirus illness recover on their own without medical intervention.

PBA is following guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Though cases in the U.S. have been limited, the CDC advises that Americans should prepare for the spread of the virus. Presently, the University is not aware of any reported cases in Palm Beach County though cases in other parts of the state are now being tallied. Campus leaders are in touch with the Florida Department of Health to learn how the state is working to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The University remains open and operating normally. Classrooms are getting a deep cleaning this week as well as common areas. Additional hand sanitizer stations are being installed. We are encouraging hand washing through an educational effort. We recommend that you clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe. Individuals who are at highest risk due to their age or health should consider social distancing in addition to routine precautions.

The University will continue to communicate frequently with our students, faculty, staff, parents, family members and those our University serves so that we can act in a knowledgeable and prudent way. Our Christian calling encourages us to care for those entrusted to us by the Lord and to pray for those who have been affected most by this virus.

The next informational update will be released Friday, March 6.

PBA Health Alert- Message 1 (1 p.m.; 2/28/20)

Likely you are aware of news reports and rumors surrounding the Coronavirus (COVID-19), and share concern for those affected by it. PBA takes our Christian calling to care for those entrusted to us by the Lord as a mandate to trust in Him as we use our God-given knowledge and abilities to understand things like diseases. While our community today has not been directly affected, we know that our students, faculty, staff, parents, family members and those our University serves have questions about the Coronavirus. We take our mission of enlightening minds, enriching souls, and extending hands very seriously, and we wanted to provide up-to-date information on the Coronavirus along with what we are doing so that all of members of our community can act in a knowledgeable and prudent way.

PBA is actively monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak through the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). To date, no suspected cases have been reported in Florida. As we approach undergraduate Spring Break, if you choose to travel the CDC recommends the following:

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
Stay home when you are sick.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
If you plan to travel outside of the United States, please check travel guidance posted on the CDC website which can be found at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html

Most people with the COVID-19 illness will recover on their own. Although there are no specific treatments for illnesses caused by human coronaviruses, you can take the following actions to relieve symptoms if you are mildly sick:

Take pain and fever medications.
Use a room humidifier or take a hot shower to help ease a sore throat and cough.
Drink plenty of liquids.
Stay home and rest.
If you are concerned about your symptoms, please call your local healthcare provider BEFORE arriving at your physician’s office or an urgent care center. They can provide you more specific instructions and better prepare for your arrival.
