Biography
Dr. Elmore, who won the Corts Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2013, teaches American literature before 1900, narratology, grammar and composition, and Supper Honors courses. Her primary area of research involves American and British writers of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Her readings of texts by Catharine Sedgwick, Maria Edgeworth, Mark Twain, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Harriet Beecher Stowe examine the intersections of imaginative literature with faith, politics, social critique and reform movements, especially anti-slavery and women’s rights. Her most recent articles have appeared in American Literary Realism and Symbiosis: A Journal of Transatlantic Literary Relations.
Dr. Elmore has presented her research widely at academic conferences including the Society for the Study of American Women Writers, American Literature Association, American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, and the Catharine Maria Sedgwick Society, of which she is First Vice President.
Dr. Elmore, her husband, Charles (a journalist with The Palm Beach Post), and their teenage son live in Wellington, where she is a ministry leader and school board member at St. David’s Episcopal Church. They have two adult daughters: one a graduate student in biology at Harvard University and the other a registered nurse at Duke University Medical Center.
