An interfaith group of more than 400 volunteers picked peppers, petted puppies and packed supplies for the homeless on Monday for MLK Day of Service, continuing the longstanding PBA tradition of “making it a day on, not a day off.”
The volunteers, dispatched through PBA’s Workship Office and the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County, served at 13 projects benefitting community partners who serve residents across the county. Volunteers packed enough food boxes to supply 75 families with meals for two weeks. They painted one house, packaged 500 toiletry kits for homeless people, packed 1,200 brown bag lunches, collected more than 100 pounds of trash at a beach cleanup and picked up 13 bags of trash at a neighborhood cleanup. Volunteers walked and played with dogs at Big Dog Ranch Rescue.

Dr. Terriel Byrd, an expert on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., professor of urban Christian ministry and chair of PBA’s Council for Intercultural Engagement, gave a sermon at the evening chapel service that concluded the day. Byrd will speak again at a virtual event 6 p.m. Jan. 24 hosted by the Broward County Library.
